Profile: Oaklea, 08th Jul, 2019

Leading Cumbria based Charity, Oaklea Trust, has agreed to begin work with a local committee on Alston Moor to investigate the transfer of the former Alston Primary School building/site on Garrigill Road from Cumbria County Council, through a CAT – Community Asset Transfer.

Clive Wigley, CEO of Oaklea Trust; “We will work with the local committee with the possible aim to turn it into a resource for the local community. The plans discussed so far could include a community café, gym and facilities for young people. The next step will be to carry out a condition survey and negotiate the transfer.”

The Oaklea Trust has an excellent track record in transforming former public buildings – Elsewhere in Eden District we have already made a huge success of the former Centre 67 building in Appleby –which since Storm Desmond in 2015 is now the thriving Appleby Hub social enterprise.

Note: The current primary school is co-located with Samuel Kings Secondary School.
